April 2016 Member Spotlight: Heinz Müller

A round of applause for the winner of VPW’s Vienna DC Donau City Photo Walk, Heinz Müller!

Our congratulations go out to Heinz Müller, who is not only VPW’s only repeat-winner (he won the VPW October 2015 Burggarten Photo Competition), but succeeded in winning both first and second place at this month’s photo walk in the Donau City! You can take a look at both of his winning shots here.

Heinz is, in many ways, the heart and soul of our group – he never misses a single walk, takes part in all the monthly photo challenges, is always helpful and cheerful, and is a true VPW veteran: he has been with us since the first coordinator founded this fine group back in 2013! It was therefore my particular pleasure to be able to conduct an in-depth interview with him, and to then share it here with our readers. Enjoy!

May 2016 VPW Photo Challenge: STREET PHOTOGRAPHY

The theme of VPW’s May 2016 Photo Challenge was: STREET PHOTOGRAPHY

Kim gives lots of examples, throws around many ideas and, effectively, comes up with the following list (added to and re-phrased a little bit by yours truly):

April 2016 VPW Photo Challenge: LOOK UP

Hi, everyone!

The theme of VPW’s April 2016 Photo Challenge was: LOOK UP

Most people walk along the street looking down: at their shoes, the dull asphalt, and the glowing screens of their smart phones. Others, the more curious, look a little higher: at the shop windows, the brightly-coloured red trams, and into the faces of the people rushing past them.

This month we invited our members to look even higher than that: to look up! Look up at the fancy Viennese window frames and balconies, the silhouettes of birds in free flight, at towering church vaults, the sleek facades of reflective modernist skyscrapers in Vienna’s Donaucity, at patches of clouds, and at the fresh pink blossoms covering the cherry and magnolia trees in Burggarten this time of year.

March 2016 VPW Photo Challenge: NEW BEGINNINGS

Hi everyone!

The theme of our March 2016 Photo Challenge was: NEW BEGINNINGS

We’ve survived the Winter and Spring is finally here! Spring is the season of rebirth and new beginnings, and March is a particularly wonderful month to watch nature slowly waking up: the first buds surfacing, the first flowers blossoming, the first baby animals hopping around the fields… But new beginnings don’t necessarily have to be found in nature: you may begin a new course at the local university, start doing sports, learn a new language, start work on a new house or apartment, start a new relationship – all “new beginnings” are welcome!
